BEIRA INTERIOR

The Beira Interior region is located in the heart of central Portugal’s interior and is recognized as the country’s highest-quality wine region.

Wine production in this significant territory dates back to Roman times, contributing early on to its progressive occupation and human development. Beira Interior wines are distinguished by their rich and complex aromas, a result of the region’s particular edaphoclimatic conditions, which favor excellent levels of ripeness.

This expressiveness, combined with the unique characteristics of the territory, gives them their own identity. In this context, Beira Interior consistently asserts itself, consolidating its position as a benchmark region in the production of high-quality wines.

CLIMATE

The geographical setting of the region results in a temperate climate with continental influence, characterized by marked temperature variations, both annual and daily.

Winters are harsh, frequently with sub-zero temperatures, while hot, dry summers contrast with cool nights, a determining factor for a slower and more balanced ripening of the grapes.

The combination of these climatic conditions gives the wines of the region a distinctive profile, reinforcing their identity.

SOIL

The Beira Interior region, situated between the mountainous areas of the Serra da Estrela, Serra da Marofa, and Serra da Malcata, is distinguished by the diversity and contrast of its geological composition. Between the granitic soils of the higher areas and the schist soils associated with the Douro river basin, a significant presence of quartz veins is observed.

In these latter veins, the capacity to reflect solar radiation contributes to greater insolation, favoring the ripening process of the grapes.

These characteristics, combined with the region’s natural conditions, provide a particularly favorable setting for the development of native grape varieties, fully adapted to the specificities of the territory. This context results in wines with a fresh and expressive profile, high aromatic complexity, and markedly fruity notes.
